KDP Account Suspensions: Real Case Data on Triggers, Appeal Success Rates, and Timelines (2026)
KDP account suspension data from 25 real 2026 cases: which triggers got reversed, how long appeals took, and what really happened to withheld royalties.
A KDP account suspension is the email every self-publisher dreads, and Amazon has never published how often appeals actually work. So we counted ourselves. We collected 25 suspensions and terminations that authors documented publicly in 2026, then logged each one by trigger, appeal route, outcome, time to decision, and what happened to the money.
Evidence checked October 6, 2026. Every row links to the original post. These are self-reported accounts from Reddit’s r/KDP and one author blog, not audited data. They lean toward people who were still fighting when they posted. Treat the percentages as a map of what authors are running into, not as Amazon’s official odds.
What do the 2026 KDP suspension cases actually show?
Here is the full dataset. Use the buttons to filter by outcome. Dates are when the author posted, which is often days or weeks after the closure itself.

Which KDP account suspension triggers get reversed?
When you group the 25 cases by trigger, a pattern shows up quickly. The reversals come from cases where Amazon’s systems, not the author, made the error.
| Trigger category | Cases | Reinstated | Upheld | Unresolved | What separated wins from losses |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automated flag or review loop | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | The author could point to a human approval or an Amazon admission of error |
| Duplicate or similar content | 3 | 2 | 0 | 1 | The author owned the earlier content or could show the books were different |
| Copyright / rights claim | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | The win came after a pile of signed rights documents. | The loss involved third-party quotes and images | Abnormal reading / manipulation | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | The win was a small, explainable ARC spike. |
| The loss was upheld within about two hours | |||||
| Account info, ID or inactivity | 4 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Answering the original ID emails worked. | Authors who could not reach anyone stay |
| ed stuck | |||||
| Related or multiple accounts | 4 | 0 | 3 | 1 | No reversals, even when the author denied ever having another account |
| Trademark | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | No reversals in the 2026 sample |
| Misleading metadata | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | Both authors admitted the issue. | Both appeals failed | Reason not disclosed | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | Without a clear trigger, there was nothing specific to fix | Pen name conflict | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Too early to tell |
This lines up with what Lesley Hensell, co-founder of the Amazon consultancy Riverbend Consulting, said on the Novel Marketing podcast in July 2026. She said that across 14 years of suspended accounts, roughly a third deserved it, a third made an honest mistake, and a third were false positives. The false positives are the cases most likely to come back, because Amazon can verify the error.
If your notice mentions AI content, start with our guides to KDP AI disclosure rules and how Amazon detects AI-generated books. One older reinstated case, Jessica Shepherd’s January 2024 termination, involved a partly AI-made cover she had not disclosed. Her account came back on day six.
How long does a KDP account suspension appeal take?
Where authors reported dates, the timelines were all over the place:
- Fastest reinstatement: about one week, for a puzzle-series author removed at the end of December 2025 “due to misunderstanding.”
- Typical slow reinstatement: about one month. One author with 100+ books was reinstated on January 24, 2026, after nearly a month of emails. Amazon admitted “We incorrectly suppressed your book(s).”
- Escalated reinstatement: about five weeks for the Hidden Gems Books author, whose account was terminated in mid-July and restored within two days of Amazon receiving a certified arbitration notice on August 19.
- Longest reported win: almost six months, from a commenter who kept replying to the notice email until Amazon reversed a trademark-related closure and paid the held royalties.
- Fastest denial: about two hours. Two different authors said their appeal of a manipulation closure was upheld that quickly, which makes it unlikely anyone read it closely.
Getting reinstated does not mean everything snaps back. The January 24 author said that days later, their Kindle books showed as Live in the dashboard but could not be found on Amazon, and paperbacks were stuck as “Drafts Unavailable.” The puzzle author’s sales went from about 450 in December to about 70 in January after a one-week removal. For context on how long sales take to build in the first place, see our KDP profitability timeline.
What happens to your royalties after a KDP account suspension?
This is spelled out in the KDP Terms and Conditions (section 5.4.8, version last updated September 27, 2024). The outcome depends on why the account was closed:
| Closure reason | What the KDP Terms allow | What authors reported in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Any termination | Amazon may withhold all royalties for three months from when they would be payable, to cover refunds and offsets | Notices commonly say “You’re no longer eligible to receive any outstanding royalties” |
| Breach of your warranties or the Content Guidelines | You forfeit all royalties not yet paid | A 150+ title author lost all titles and outstanding royalties after a rights claim on one book |
| Deceptive, fraudulent or illegal activity | Amazon may permanently withhold payments and offset or claw back earlier payments | One author reported five figures frozen, mostly from unrelated books |
| Third-party rights claim | Amazon may hold all royalties until it decides the claim is valid | One author was given 5 days to send rights documentation |
| New account opened after a termination | No royalties owed through the new account without Amazon’s express permission | 4 related-account closures in the sample, 0 reversed |
Reinstatement is the only reliable way to get held money back. The commenter who was reinstated after almost six months said the held royalties were paid right away. Author David D. Friedman, reinstated in November 2022, wrote that Amazon never told him whether he would get the royalties earned before the termination. His account was closed again in January 2023 on the same multiple-accounts grounds.

Pick the trigger from your notice and your current stage. The tool matches you to the cases above, shows how those turned out, and estimates the money at stake under the KDP Terms. It runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
Which appeal routes reverse a KDP account suspension?
| Route | Cases where it was tried | Result in the sample |
|---|---|---|
| Reply to the notice / KDP Contact Us with a plan of action | Nearly all | The route behind most of the 8 reinstatements, especially when the author could prove an error |
| Answering old ID-verification emails plus a KDP Community post | 1 | Reinstated |
| jeff@amazon.com (executive escalations) | 3 | 0 reversals: one upheld after 1-2 weeks, one got no reply, one was rejected before a legal notice worked |
| Executive Customer Relations case | 1 | Still open at posting |
| Certified Notice of Intent to Arbitrate to Amazon’s registered agent | 1 | Reinstated within 2 days of receipt |
| Lawyers or a group legal claim | 1 | In progress |
On the plan of action itself, Hensell’s advice in the same interview was specific. Write three parts: the root cause, the immediate fix, and how you will prevent it from happening again. Keep each part to three or four sentences in bullet points. Admit something concrete, even if the violation was accidental. Do not let AI write it for you. Our step-by-step guide to a terminated KDP account walks through drafting one.
The arbitration route comes from section 10.1 of the KDP Terms. It requires a notice letter to Corporation Service Company in Tumwater, Washington, before any filing with the American Arbitration Association. The Hidden Gems Books author who used it had been publishing since 2011 and sold more than 71,000 copies. Both standard appeals had been rejected first. This is a legal step, so get a lawyer’s advice before you take it.
Myth-busting: what authors get wrong about KDP bans
Myth: “If you were banned, you must have done something shady.” Not in this dataset. Eight authors had their accounts reinstated, and in at least two cases Amazon admitted the mistake in writing. Hensell estimates that about a third of suspensions are false positives.
Myth: “A ‘final decision’ email really is final.” Not always. The author whose title and cover were judged too similar to a bestseller got a form letter calling it “our final decision,” and still got the account back. The author who lost everything over an infringement claim was reinstated after sending more signed evidence.
Myth: “Opening a fresh account fixes it.” This is the most expensive mistake in the data. Section 4.2 of the KDP Terms allows one account and bans new ones after a termination. Related-account closures went 0 for 3 among resolved cases, including authors who said they never had another account.
Myth: “Low-content books are safe because they are simple.” Three cases involved low-content or puzzle books, including a wave of closures in the “killer isn’t” elimination-puzzle niche. If that is your catalog, read our 2026 low-content book policy breakdown and our fix for “disappointing customer experience” notices before you upload more.
Myth: “It only happens to big publishers.” The sample ranges from accounts with zero published books to catalogs of 150+ titles. One closure hit an account its owner had not logged into for over a year.
How can you lower your risk of a KDP account suspension?
- Route KDP email to an inbox you read. One author lost their account over ID requests that went to an old address, and another closure hit an account with ignored notices.
- Treat a blocked book as a warning. In one case, a book blocked twice by the bot led to a full account suspension.
- Search your pen name and title before you publish. Name and title collisions with established authors and bestsellers caused two closures.
- License every cover asset for trademark-safe use. Both trademark cases were upheld, and one came from a Canva Pro element.
- Keep metadata literal. Both misleading-metadata closures were upheld even after the authors admitted the issue.
- Do not share account access or let anyone else run your account. A publishing-services company lost its account through a client’s ban.
- Do not depend on one store. Several authors in the sample were already asking about other retailers. If KDP is your only income, compare the tradeoffs in KDP Select vs going wide.
KDP account suspension FAQ
Can you get a KDP account back after it is terminated?
Yes, sometimes. In our 25 documented 2026 cases, 8 authors got their accounts back and 11 did not. Every reinstatement involved a trigger the author could show was a mistake, such as an automated flag, an ID problem, or proof of rights. None of the trademark, related-account or metadata closures in the sample were reversed.
Will Amazon pay my withheld KDP royalties?
It depends on why the account was closed. The KDP Terms and Conditions let Amazon hold royalties for three months after termination. If the account is terminated for breaching your warranties or the Content Guidelines, unpaid royalties are forfeited. If Amazon finds deceptive or fraudulent activity, it can withhold payments permanently and claw back earlier ones. One author who was reinstated after about six months said their held royalties were paid right away.
How long does a KDP appeal take?
In our sample, reinstatements took anywhere from about one week to about five weeks, and one commenter reported almost six months. Denials can be much faster. Two authors said their appeal was upheld about two hours after they sent it.
Can I open a new KDP account after a ban?
Not without permission. Section 4.2 of the KDP Terms says you may keep only one account and must not open a new one after a termination. If you open one anyway without Amazon’s express permission, Amazon says it will not owe you royalties through it. Four cases in our table were closed as related or multiple accounts.
Does emailing jeff@amazon.com help with a KDP suspension?
Sometimes it gets a reply, but it did not reverse anything in our sample. Three authors used it. One got a reply in one to two weeks that upheld the ban, one heard nothing back, and in the third case the email was rejected before a certified arbitration notice got the account restored.
What is the difference between a KDP suspension and a termination?
The KDP Terms let Amazon either suspend your account or terminate the agreement if it has concerns about your account. Authors often use the words interchangeably. In practice, the email that matters is the one that says titles are removed from sale and outstanding royalties are forfeited. That one signals a termination.
Should I send Amazon a notice of intent to arbitrate?
It is a legal step, so talk to a lawyer first. Section 10.1 of the KDP Terms says disputes go to binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association, and that you must first send a notice letter to Amazon’s registered agent. One author in our sample got reinstated two days after Amazon received that letter. That is one case, not a pattern you can count on.
Methodology and limits
We searched r/KDP for 2026 posts about KDP account suspension cases, including terminations, closures and reinstatements. We kept every post that described a specific closure, plus one 2026 author blog case, and logged each one from the original text and the poster’s own updates. Posts with no detail at all were left out. The “Posted” date is the publication date, and some closures happened earlier. One of the related-account bans dates back to around 2023. Outcomes reflect the last update by the poster as of October 6, 2026. Cases marked unresolved may have been decided since. Amazon publishes no official appeal success rates. Nothing here is legal advice.
